I counted 35 between Eunoses, MX-5s, 1600/1800 Roadsters and Miatas. Check out the official list

. (Note: Unfortunately, no V8 Miatas like the Targa Miata shown above are included.)

Could somebody please explain the difference between them?

I'm excited for the PS4 so I can buy a PS3 cheap and get this.

Very slight differences in horsepower, weight and color.
The 1.6 engine is less powerful but has more throttle response
NA, NB, NC is of course the generation
"J" signifies JDM, yo

Didn't count either of those. Also, the image I posted doesn't include the 6 Eunos Roadsters, so it's not a comprehensive list of all Miatas; it's just a visual aid to show that there are so many of them.

Really, or are you just joking? There are some that are virtually identical, but there's also quite a wide array of different years, specs, generations, etc. this is just a few of them from GT5:

I'm still confused: they dropped the premium/standard system right? But still—not all the cars are created equal..?

This is why I don't really like GT. You get 30 different variants of the MX-5, many of which are almost identical, but only two Alfas. One of which is a MiTo.
What the hell?

I believe they are accounting for the 1.6 L and 1.8 L variants sold in Eruo spec, JDM spec and the 1.8 L USDM spec. Essentially the 1.6 and 1.8 L cars are the same respectively but with differing suspension tuning on the cars in the real world. In the game, I don't think anything other than the fact of the 1.6 and 1.8 sized motors would make a difference as I don't know anyone who plays the game that doesn't fiddle with the suspension. I do think it is silly that there are so many Miata variants in the GT series and I am pretty sure that a 1.6 L and 1.8 L example of both the NA and NB would suffice, with a few extra of the actual special editions that were more than just a trim change. The '04-'05 MSM comes to mind along with the few NA JDM Mazdaspeed cars. But there isn't a need for so many differing Miatas as the main differences would be the 1.8 L being offered in '94 up and the generation change in '99, then there is the addition of VVT in '01 but aside from that the differences between each Miata in the game is pretty much negligible to warrant so many being in the game.

I get the different generations, but I'm not a MX5 encyclopedia. Some just seem to be exactly the same to me, and I will modify the cars anyway so why are there that many in the game? I think 4 or 5 should be enough. I mean, look at how many BMWs or Mustang they put in the game.

This is one of the reasons why I like Forza better. They give you an NA Miata and say "make it exactly the way you want it"

I'm not really a Miata fan as it is, to have 30+ in the same game is a touch excessive.

I don't actually mind the 30+ Miatas, and more GT-Rs, but when it comes at the expense of other cars I don't really see the point.
Just pick a couple of the major players, include them and go find something different.

Exactly. If they included the first generation Miata and a couple more after that that had merit I would be okay with it.

The miata is the new skyline apparently. Or are we getting 500 of those as well?

Well it's a good thing since nobody will modify the car's weight or horsepower in the game...

Typical GT5. 1200 cars, most of them dozens of the same JDM cars. My biggest beef with them is when they give you a RHD version of a car that comes from a LHD country. I understand a RHD Skyline. But a RHD Alfa? It's annoying when I want to drive a car with my G27 wheel and the interior view is RHD.
